Its a nice walk through Blean woods down to the coast, where we naturally stopped for light refreshment which included a glass of wine (medicinal).
Quite a busy walk with cyclists (obviously) dog walkers, walkers and runners... a young girl passed us jogging very under dressed for the cold day (shows we are getting old to have thought this).. but then we saw her a short while later crying at the side of the path with blood running from her knee (nice) so I said the guys had first aid kits in their packs (how lucky) so we asked them to attend...
Well.. here the learning curve begins. Mark couldn't find his first aid kit that was buried 'somewhere' in his rucksack, Geoff found his, however we realised very quickly how inadequate these small travel first aid packs were, I struggled to find the right items & no antiseptic wipes, so we poured water to clean the deep cut as best we could then found a non adhesive gauze pad and taped it round her knee. She was very grateful and hobbled off with a bottle of water Mark gave her (he found that) it was only afterwards we thought she would get very cold as she was quite shocked, we could have rummaged in Marks bag and given her his survival blanket....
Apparently a dog had come bounding up to her & she fell, the owner of the dog laughed gave her a tissue & left !!
So the moral is...
- Avoid dogs (!)
- Have enough items in the first aid kit
- Scissors that cut
- Have the kit handy
- Learn basic first aid, you might not need it but you may come across someone that does
150,000 people died last year in situations
where first aid could have given them the chance to live.
